In my column in this week’s The National newspaper, I advise a reader who is worried her husband’s mother will come between them as she is in India preparing to give birth to their child. I explain that if her husband chooses to divorce the woman, she will be entitled to damage compensation, three months of personal maintenance and will be obliged to pay for the child’s costs until a daughter reaches the age of 13 or son reaches the age of 11. There is also a provision to claim 36 months of backdated expenses prior to any divorce if she can she show she was not financially supported. I also explain she can travel to the UAE to file charges against her Dubai-resident husband.
