My husband ran away from us – can I divorce him in his absence?

In my legal advice column in The National newspaper, I answer a woman who wants to divorce her absent husband. The non-Muslim woman has been taking care of the couple’s children financially and physically for more than five years and when she recently requested a divorce he refused and ran away from the country.
