This week in my column in The National newspaper, I answer a reader who is due to be married in a Muslim ceremony but who is concerned about the potential he may take another wife in the future and would like to know her legal position. I explain that while it is not possible to stop her husband-to-be from taking another three wives, as four wives are permitted under Sharia law, she is able to request a special condition – with the consent of her fiancé – that would allow her to file for divorce in the event he chooses to marry another woman during their marriage.
